Computer Monitors and Television Sets Are Hazardous Waste in California
The State of California determined that discarded televisions and computer monitors are classified as hazardous waste, unless properly recycled.  This means it is illegal to dispose of a computer monitor or television by putting it in the regular trash or in a dumpster.

Recycling News You Can Use
California Has A Recycling Fee for Electronic Devices

Effective January 1, 2005 California state law requires that retailers collect a recycling fee on certain covered electronic devices.  A fee will be included on new sales as a result of that law.  The amount of the fee is based upon the size of the video display screen on the covered electronic device as follows:

$6 - greater than 4 inches but less than 15 inches measured diagonally
$8 - greater than or equal to 15 inches but less than 35 inches measured diagonally
$10 - greater than or equal to 35 inches measured diagonally
