How to Dispose of Fireworks

Firework safety doesn't stop at detonation. They can be extremely dangerous if you throw them away carelessly.  To dispose of fireworks:

  1. Remove the fuse.
  2. Submerge fully in water for at least 15 minutes (ideally soak them overnight).
  3. Wrap the soaked fireworks in two trash bags, and secure tightly.
  4. Place the double bagged fireworks in your curbside trash.

This also applies to 'dud' fireworks that didn't go off, as they are still liable to explode.

If you have explosives to dispose of (including firecrackers or marine flares), please call the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's office.
