Recycle Used Oil

Did you know that used motor oil can be cleaned and recycled? Recycling used motor oil conserves natural resources, and is good for the environment too. Motor oil poured onto the ground or into storm drains, or tossed into trash cans (even in a sealed container) can contaminate soil, groundwater, streams and rivers. Recycling your used motor oil reduces the threat of pollution, and helps your old oil become something new!

Curbside Collection
The easiest way to recycle your used motor oil is to schedule a FREE curbside pick-up through your garbage service provider.
Your hauler will provide a container for used motor oil and a bag to collect used oil filters, and pick them up straight from your curb, at no charge. Contact them to schedule your container drop-off and pick-up.

Certified Used Oil Collection Containers
Several auto parts stores and related retailers across the county are certified by the State of California as Used Oil Collection centers. They will take used motor oil from the public and will pay $0.40 a gallon. Most centers will take up to 5 gallons at a time. Household Hazardous Waste Facilities
Residents of SLO County may drop off up to 15 gallons of hazardous waste per visit. Appointments are not required, but please check holiday closure dates before going to a facility. Hours and locations can be found here: https://www.iwma.com/residential-hazardous-waste-disposal. You can drop-off oil in any container with a closing lid, but please note that the container used will not be returned.
