Poem: Global Garbage Person Day

Did you know that June 17th was Global Garbage Person Day? This holiday recognizes the dedicated efforts of the people who work tirelessly to collect our trash, organics and recyclables. City of SLO resident, Stu Goldenberg, shared this poem to commemorate the holiday and honor his neighborhood garbageperson. Check it out!

Global Garbage Person Day - June 17, 2024
By Stu Goldenberg

With little contact with a trash worker,
Not the job for someone that's a shirker.
The person I celebrate was our guy,
We always gave to his garbage supply.

Steve did gather all our trash every week,
He would always dump it but never peek.
Collecting trash for over forty years,
Perhaps not the most exciting careers.

We would get to see Steve all over town,
To us he's a trash collector renown.
He would always wave and he'd say hello,
Talk was short because he needed to go.

Steve's old trash truck had his name on the side,
We believe he drove it with lots of pride.
That old truck did wear out before he did,
He treated it like a toy for a kid.

His replacement truck was blue and yellow,
But no label plate to name the fellow.
True this new truck didn't frequently break,
But Steve's job was never really at stake.

Steve has retired and we wish him well,
It's not as if he was really our pal.
We thank him and his hard working cohorts,
For collecting all our trash and the sorts.
